How to detect electricity theft from smart meter data

Unmetered consumption is energy the meter does not record or under-records: meter tampering, load bypassing the meter, a connection before the meter. Unauthorised consumption has no contract at all. The metering system already collects the data needed to find both; GRID-IN turns it into a list of addresses with an estimate of the unmetered energy.

Why is the metering system alone not enough?

The metering system shows the substation imbalance as a whole and the readings of every meter. It does not say which of dozens of consumers is where energy is lost. A drop in one meter’s consumption proves nothing by itself: the consumer may have gone away or changed equipment. What is needed is a link between the substation imbalance and a specific address — and that is what GRID-IN provides.

What does GRID-IN give?

A field inspection target list. For every target:

A conclusion rests not on one sign but on agreement between several independent methods, and always comes with an estimate of how much energy is lost. A finding confirmed by several methods gets a higher score.

Illustrative example. A substation with 64 consumers, 14 % imbalance. GRID-IN points to an address on Garden Street: meter, “unmetered consumption”, estimate ≈ 2,600 kWh a month, high confirmation probability. The crew checks one address instead of 64 and records the outcome.

What does the field crew get?

Why is this better than inspecting everyone?

Inspecting everyone checks hundreds of honest consumers too. A target list names a few addresses per substation, each with a reason. Crews spend their time where energy is lost — and first where the most is lost.

Can cryptocurrency mining be found?

Yes. Mining is a separate type of finding — both metered and bypassing the meter.

Is a network diagram needed?

Not for theft detection: the methods without a diagram work from metering data. A diagram adds technical loss calculation and shows on which section of the network energy is lost.

What data is needed?

Load profiles of consumer meters and of the substation input meter for the same period. Event logs, billing and a registry with addresses raise confidence. Details — Data requirements; the overall plan — How to reduce losses in 0.4 kV networks.
